Akari Light Sculpture Curriculum Guide
Written By Dionne Thornton
This sculpture curriculum guide for teenage students from the Noguchi Museum centers around the Akari light sculpture. Akari are inspired by chochin, traditional Japanese paper lanterns that were lit by a flame. Akari instead were lit by a bulb, and sought to combine traditional Japanese and Western lighting to reinvigorate a post-war Japan. Learn more about this pivotal moment in Japanese history, teach your students about art and design, and introduce them to this important cultural moment in advance of a visit to the Noguchi Museum.
